Farnham Farmhouse Wallpaper
EAST MORRIS, CONNECTICUT
Designer: Erin Bartlett
BACKGROUND
Farnham Farm is almost 300 years old, and was inherited by Heather Washburn in the summer of 2021. She’s been visiting and caring for the farm most of her life and understood the importance for the family to maintain much of the farmhouse’s history. So you can imagine how devastating it was when a 5 foot diameter maple tree fell onto the farmhouse in 2016. One of the casualties of the disaster was losing the wallpaper in several rooms. It is likely the original wallpaper was from the 1920s but could also have been applied much earlier in the late 1800s when significant work was done on the house.
OBJECTIVE
The original wallpaper is no longer available, but it was important to the family to create patterns that had a similar feel to the originals. The advantage to creating something new is that we were able to fine-tune the colors, pull in family history and family sentiment. The hallway was the one area we tried to stay as close to the original as possible for the family. In the front parlor we incorporated the family crest into the pattern. The bedrooms and dining room wallpaper were inspired by botanicals, such as queen anne’s lace, forget-me-knots, and geraniums. The colors for all the wallpaper came from the farm: outside in the fields or inside from artwork and furniture.
